Jaclyn Carrell

Jaclyn is an outstanding leader, dedicated volunteer, and passionate advocate for our community. Her unwavering commitment to service and her ability to bring people together make her a true asset to DeLand. She currently serves as the President of the Rotaract Club of DeLand, leading young professionals in meaningful service projects that strengthen our community. She is also the President of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, playing a key role in organizing one of DeLand’s most beloved cultural events, which highlights the talents of artists from near and far while fostering economic and artistic growth. In addition, she currently serves on the board for DeLand Police Athletic League (DPAL), an organization who’s goal is to give the youth of greater DeLand area something different and unique to expand their interest. Beyond her leadership roles, Jaclyn is deeply engaged in several other organizations. She is a member of the Museum of Art - DeLand Guild, supporting the arts and cultural enrichment in our community. She is also an active member of the DeLand & Greater West Volusia Chamber of Commerce, where she has serves on the Education Committee and played an instrumental role in organizing the Crystal Apple Award, which recognizes and honors outstanding educators in our area. Her dedication to education and community development reflects her passion for making a lasting impact. Jaclyn’s commitment to growth and leadership is evident through her participation in the 2023 Leadership DeLand program, a partnership between the DeLand & Greater West Volusia Chamber of Commerce and Stetson University. Through this program, she has gained invaluable insight into community leadership and continues to apply those lessons to drive positive change in DeLand. Jaclyn Carrell is a remarkable woman who embodies leadership, selflessness, and a heart for service. Her impact can be felt across many aspects of our community, and her passion for making DeLand a better place is truly inspiring.

Althea Ross Chavers

Althea Ross Chavers, affectionately known as "The Beautiful Althea," is a woman whose leadership and compassion have had a profound impact on DeLand, Florida. Born and raised in Spring Hill, DeLand, Althea is the wife of Bishop Larry D. Chavers Sr. and mother to four children—Ayla, Asha, Liric, and her adopted son, Lorenzo. Through her work with youth, advocacy for breast cancer awareness, and service in the church, Althea exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose. For over two decades, Althea has been a cornerstone of the Ed Lacey Spring Hill Boys & Girls Club, where she serves as the Site Director. Her dedication to youth development has shaped countless lives, offering a nurturing environment where young people can learn, grow, and succeed. Her leadership is not only about providing programs but also about being a mentor and mother figure to the children she serves. This commitment to helping others was recognized recently when a newly rectified teen center was named in her honor. Before her role at the Boys & Girls Club, Althea worked as a Montessori educator and director, instilling values of responsibility, respect, and resilience in young minds. Her approach to leadership is rooted in the belief that every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to thrive. In 2006, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Althea founded the “Keeping the Fight” Breast Cancer Foundation, which raises funds to support individuals currently battling the disease. Through her foundation, she provides not only financial assistance but also emotional support to those facing cancer. Althea’s work has united the community around this important cause, fostering hope and solidarity for those affected by breast cancer. Althea's leadership extends to her faith, where she serves as assistant pastor at Saint James Missionary Baptist Church in Osteen, Florida. She offers spiritual guidance, leads prayer groups, and organizes community outreach programs, such as food drives and back-to-school events. Her work within the church further demonstrates her commitment to uplifting those around her. In addition to her community work, Althea's presence on social media has allowed her to connect with people far beyond DeLand. Through her online platforms, she raises awareness for causes, shares resources, and inspires others to make a difference. Althea’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life has earned her the deep respect and admiration of the community. Althea has been recognized multiple times for her contributions, receiving proclamations and days named in her honor. Despite these accolades, she remains humble, always redirecting the praise to the community she serves. Her life motto, “If I can help someone as I travel along my way, then my living will not be in vain,” reflects her selflessness and dedication to improving the lives of others. In conclusion, Althea Ross Chavers is a true embodiment of the values represented by the DeLand Woman of the Year Award and the Heart of the Community Award. Through her tireless work with youth, breast cancer advocacy, and leadership in her church, Althea has left an indelible mark on DeLand. Her unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and community makes her the perfect nominee for these prestigious honors.

Courtney Edgcomb

As an engaged alumni of Stetson University and long time resident of DeLand, Courtney Edgcomb is very deserving of this recognition. She earned her Bachelors Degree from Stetson University and then she went on to earn her Masters Degree in Management from Troy University. After graduating from Stetson University Courtney made the decision to remain in DeLand and raise her children in this impactful community. Her family is engaged in DeLand schools and stays very active in the local community from sports activities to extracurricular activities. Courtney, her husband and children also stay active in the Stetson Baptist Church including the children's ministry. She made the decision to stay local and serve her community by working at a non-profit and has supported the community in that capacity over the past eleven years. She is currently the President and CEO of the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. As a past recipient of the Daytona Beach News-Journal's 40 Under Forty she exemplifies a young professional that gives back locally. In addition to that leadership role she also serves as the Chair of the Board for the Flagler County Emergency Food and Shelter Program and contributes to a better quality of life for the entire state of Florida as a member of the Board of Governors for the United Way of Florida. Not only does she advocate locally she also travels to our State Capitol each year to advocate in Tallahassee by meeting with elected officials to share the challenges facing our local community. As a graduate of the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Daytona program she stays active as an Alumni Council Member. She also presented about "The Science of Service" at Elevate Daytona to share how serving others provides benefits to everyone. She stays engaged in the local economic efforts by participating in Team Volusia. By understanding the economic development initiatives, she is a part of the opportunities for residents to improve their opportunities. Marie Johnson

Marie Johnson is a selfless dedicated hard worker who always answers when called. Marie is actively involved with the DeLand Youth Cadet Program that her son attended. She helped with everything from uniform fitting to program coordinating. She has 4 kids who are active in the DeLand Police Athletic League where she is highly involved. This lady never says no and does anything and everything asked of her. From event committees to chaperone she gives 110%. DPAL would not be the same without her. She has a huge heart for the community and kids. That infectious smile and willingness to jump in with both feet make her irreplaceable. In 2023 DPAL had 6 programs during the year. Marie not only signed her kids up, but she also helped with setup, jumped in to help with instruction and participated in a couple as well. She was nominated as volunteer of the year by the Chief Umberger, officers, staff and the Director. She leads by example, very hands-on with projects, and open to doing whatever is asked of her. The ideal person and volunteer for any program. In cooking class she helps with setup, walks around making sure kids are following instructions and being safe. When we take the kids fishing, she helps distribute poles and bait while watching over the kids. Biking riding is a family affair, so her husband and kids participate as well. They help her keep her group together. Self-defense, photography, weight training, boxing, and hair braiding, she’s there. Events such as veterans’ day parade, Christmas parade She works to design and decorate the float as well as giving the kids instructions on safety. Our drive through breakfast would not work without her. She works at multiple stations from directing traffic to serving meals. And to top off the year DPAL is a distribution point for toys 4 tots and she’s there all week helping. She’s on the DPAL event committee and aspires to be a DPAL board member. She is truly a godsend. She raises money for our sneaker drive and programs. Whenever you see DPAL or the DPAL tent you can rest assure Marie is there. Loving mother, wife, friend. Her children have the same heart for volunteering and their community. She loves to chaperone is our Leadership Camp. She gets to chaperone and mentor 10 young ladies. She not only works with them, but she also sleeps in the same cabin and has heart-to-heart discussions about being a selfless dedicated leader. Her team always rises to any challenge while doing team building exercises and competing against the boys. Yes; Marie Johnson is a Loving mother and wife but to DPAL and DeLand PD she will always be the number 1 Volunteer.

Stephanie Garcia Mullins is a dedicated advocate for the West Volusia community, a leader in historic preservation, and a driving force behind the success of MainStreet DeLand. As a native Floridian and a graduate of Florida State University, Stephanie has deep roots in the area and a vested interest in its economic and cultural growth. With a lifetime of experience in organizational marketing, large-scale event management, and nonprofit development, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to strengthening our local businesses and ensuring the vitality of Historic Downtown DeLand. Stephanie’s impact on MainStreet DeLand has been nothing short of transformative. Having previously served as Assistant Director, she played an instrumental role in securing some of the highest state-level awards for the organization, building invaluable relationships with state and local leaders to bring resources and opportunities to our community. Since stepping into her current role, her leadership, communication, and hands-on approach have elevated the organization’s presence and effectiveness. I have personally witnessed the difference in community engagement, volunteer involvement, and overall event coordination since Stephanie joined the MainStreet DeLand team. Her dedication extends far beyond daily operations—she is at the heart of some of DeLand’s most beloved events, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure their success. From the Beer Festival and Taste of DeLand to the Jazz Festival, Shop Small initiatives, and Wine, Women & Chocolate, Stephanie’s influence is evident in the seamless execution and growing popularity of these events. Additionally, she serves on various boards of directors as the MainStreet DeLand representative, collaborating with city officials and local stakeholders to enhance logistics and ensure the long-term prosperity of our historic downtown district. Stephanie Mullins is not only an advocate for DeLand’s businesses and historic charm but also a true leader who brings passion, vision, and a commitment to community engagement. Nikki Risley

Nikki’s unwavering dedication to her profession, her community, and the empowerment of others makes her an exceptional candidate for the 9th Annual DeLand Woman of the Year award. As one of the youngest Dealer General Managers in Volusia and Flagler Counties, Nikki has shattered barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry. She is the only woman to have reached this level of leadership in the area’s automotive sector—a testament to her determination, expertise, and relentless work ethic. Her career trajectory has been nothing short of inspiring, having worked her way up through the dealership ranks with a deep passion for the industry. Her recent promotion to General Manager of Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM and Maserati Alfa Romeo of Daytona is a well-earned reflection of her leadership and business acumen. In 2024, Nikki was recognized with dual honors as one of the “40 Under 40” young professionals in Volusia and Flagler Counties, as well as one of the region’s “Most Influential Women in Business.” These accolades reflect her ability to inspire those around her, her commitment to excellence, and her ability to balance professional success with personal integrity. Beyond her professional achievements, Nikki’s impact extends far beyond the showroom floor. She plays an active role in community service and philanthropy, dedicating her time and expertise to causes that uplift and support local families. She serves as Treasurer for the Golf for Kids’ Sake Tournament through her leadership role as Vice President of 71 MVP Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to fundraising for children’s charities across Volusia and Flagler Counties. Her leadership in this organization ensures that critical resources reach children in need, making a tangible difference in their lives. Nikki also serves as Campaign Treasurer for Randy Dye for Volusia County Chair, further showcasing her commitment to civic engagement and leadership within the community. Additionally, she holds a board seat on the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce, where she advocates for local businesses, economic growth, and community development. At just 38 years old, Nikki has accomplished what many strive for over the course of a lifetime. She is not only an accomplished professional but also a role model who leads with integrity, passion, and an unwavering commitment to those around her. Her ability to balance her career, family, and faith while continuing to give back to the community is truly remarkable. Nikki embodies the qualities of a Woman of the Year—a leader, a trailblazer, a mentor, and a dedicated community advocate. Her contributions to both the business world and local philanthropic efforts have left an indelible mark on Volusia County, and her influence will continue to grow in the years to come. For these reasons, Nikki Risley is a deserving recipient of the 9th Annual DeLand Woman of the Year award.

Katherine Russell

Katherine Russell’s leadership reflects a profound commitment to the community, impactful support for individuals facing substance use disorders (SUD), and the fostering of transformative partnerships. As Executive Director of Foundations to Freedom, Inc., Katherine’s personal journey with SUD shapes her leadership approach. Her vision has been instrumental in erasing the stigma surrounding recovery and inspiring others to join in supporting those on the path to healing. Through her efforts, Foundations has collaborated with organizations such as Second Harvest, the Volusia Recovery Alliance, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Family Health Source, RAAO, Recovery Village, and more. Her advocacy earned Foundations the Outstanding Community Partner Award for 2024. Katherine works to reduce the stigma of SUD by educating community members and partners about the program’s holistic services. These efforts have strengthened partnerships that significantly enhance the program's impact. Under Katherine’s guidance, Foundations has facilitated 38 successful reunifications of parents with their children, and another father is currently in the process. The program helps clients move from crisis to stability, teaching life skills that promote independence. This reduces interactions with law enforcement, probation, and DCF, lowering recidivism and homelessness. Katherine’s commitment to her clients led to her receiving the West Volusia Wellness Award from the West Volusia Chamber of Commerce for her contributions to promoting wellness across the county. After learning of the high rates of overdose deaths in Volusia County, Katherine partnered with the Volusia County Council to secure an opioid abatement grant, which will fund NARCAN vending machines around the county. Her proactive efforts to address substance abuse challenges demonstrate her dedication to improving public health. Katherine’s kindness and generosity shine through in everyday actions. Whether stopping to help someone in need or opening her home to community members affected by a disaster, Katherine consistently goes above and beyond. Her selflessness has inspired her staff, who now volunteer at local events and support other nonprofit organizations. Katherine’s impact on the community includes changing the way people view those in recovery. She has provided care for Foundations clients that goes beyond traditional transitional housing, focusing on the individual’s needs and helping them build stable, independent lives. Her consistent presence in the community, lowering barriers to recovery, has contributed to the program’s growth—from one home in 2022 to nine homes in 2024. Foundations has also earned certification from the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR) and aligns with National Alliance of Recovery Residences (NARR) standards. Katherine’s leadership is about more than managing an organization; it’s about making a lasting difference in people’s lives, supporting staff, and creating a community where recovery is possible and celebrated. Her unwavering dedication to service, both personally and professionally, exemplifies the power of selfless leadership. Katherine’s contributions to the recovery community and Volusia County reflect the true meaning of giving back and exemplify the impact one individual can have on a community.

Kellee Holland Smith

Kellee is deeply cherished by her family, friends, and this community. She radiates warmth and positivity, always greeting others with a smile and a willingness to help however she can. Whether she’s volunteering her time, mentoring young professionals, or supporting local initiatives, she does so with passion and an unwavering commitment to making DeLand a better place. Her laugh is infectious, her presence uplifting, and her dedication to those around her is truly inspiring. A proud DeLand native and graduate of DeLand High School’s Class of 1983, Kellee is the Broker/Owner of Prestige Properties, a company deeply rooted in family tradition. Founded by her parents in 1988, Prestige Properties has flourished under her leadership, specializing in residential, commercial, and property management services. After earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University, Kellee spent three decades in Atlanta, where she successfully owned and operated a real estate company and a self-storage facility. Her return to DeLand marked the continuation of her family's business legacy, where she has prioritized ethical practices, education, and relationship-building to ensure its sustained growth and success. She has earned esteemed designations, including Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) and Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR), showcasing her dedication to professional excellence. Kellee is an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the West Volusia Association of Realtors (WVAR), National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM), National Association of Realtors (NAR), and Business Networking International (BNI). Beyond her professional achievements, Kellee is a pillar of the DeLand community, devoting her time and leadership to numerous local organizations. She is a dedicated member of the DeLand Breakfast Rotary and played a pivotal role as Founder Liaison in establishing the Rotaract Club of DeLand, which received its charter in 2018. Her commitment to community service extends to her roles on the Board of Directors for the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce and Orange City Alliance, as well as her involvement with MainStreet DeLand Association, DeLand Tennis Club, and St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Kellee’s impact reaches far beyond her professional and civic contributions—she is a devoted mother to Trey Holland and Anslee Thurman and a proud grandmother to Evy Rae. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, camping, playing tennis, and cherishing time with family and friends. Through her unwavering dedication to her profession and her community, Kellee Holland Smith exemplifies the values of leadership, integrity, and service, making her a truly deserving nominee for DeLand Woman of the Year.

Kristi Tyrrell

With over 30 years of service, Kristi’s commitment to our community is unparalleled. Through her work in various sectors, she has become a cornerstone of DeLand, driving positive change, economic growth, and community engagement. Kristi is the Secretary of MainStreet DeLand and Chair of the Economic Vitality Committee, where her leadership has helped revitalize our downtown. Her nearly 20 years of involvement with the Krewe of Amalee, including two years as Captain, reflect her dedication and leadership. She has also earned the Member of the Month award, a testament to her extraordinary contributions. Her long-standing relationship with Stetson University is marked by her previous role as sideline photographer for both Stetson and DeLand High School football, as well as her participation in Leadership Stetson and membership in the Stetson Football 150 Club. Kristi also played a key role in organizing the Friday Night Lights 3K and contributed to the Grand Opening of Melching Field. Kristi’s leadership spans her presidency of the West Volusia Association of Realtors, where she guided the association through significant growth. She received the Game Changer Award from the National Association of Realtors, bringing national recognition to our area. Additionally, Kristi was named Humanitarian of the Year by the West Volusia Association of Realtors and served on the I-4 Economic Development Committee. Kristi’s commitment to cancer research through her work with the American Cancer Society is unmatched. She co-chaired Making Strides and was instrumental in bringing the first Relay for Life to West Volusia, a legacy event that still impacts the community. Kristi’s contributions also extend to the cultural enrichment of DeLand, having served on the Board of Directors for the DeLand Museum of Art. Kristi’s impact on those around her is profound. Leah Miles Prokop, Co-Founder of The Esther 414 Foundation, describes her as “a true leader with a servant’s heart,” and David Solar, past chairman of the Rotary Club of DeLand, calls her a “wonderful asset to our community.” Aimee Dickerhoff, past president of the DeLand Museum of Art Guild, praises Kristi for her “vision and compassion,” while Jacque Bartlett of Clear Choice Healthcare notes her “unwavering commitment” to the Alliance Community. Kristi is known for her creativity and heart when planning events, as Jennifer Shaw Wilder of the Sanborn Activity Center attests. Woody O-Cain, former Assistant VP of Alumni Affairs at Stetson, highlights her behind-the-scenes efforts that were crucial to the success of Stetson’s alumni and parent programs. Melody Hall, Broker Associate, Sustaining Junior Service League, and Krewe of Amalee member, praises Kristi for uniting people around causes she supports and creating success in DeLand. Kristi Tyrrell embodies the spirit of the DeLand Woman of the Year Award: a woman of honor and integrity, a devoted wife and mother, a leader, and a philanthropist. Her dedication to DeLand is felt in every corner of our town, and her tireless service makes DeLand a better place for all. Karen Weiss

Karen and her husband, Scott, moved from Miami to DeLand in 1997, quickly immersing themselves in the local community. Karen is a dedicated leader, passionate advocate, and an inspiring force in DeLand. She is the Past President of The Rotary Club of DeLand and holds the distinction of being the club’s first female president—an achievement that paved the way for future female leaders in the organization. Karen served as an Assistant Governor for Rotary District 6970 for six years and held several other district offices, contributing her time and expertise to the broader mission of Rotary International. She also played a key role in establishing EarlyAct clubs at Blue Lake and Starke Elementary Schools, fostering a culture of service and leadership in young students. Beyond Rotary, Karen has made a lasting impact on DeLand’s cultural and philanthropic landscape. She served on the board of the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts and is a past president of the organization, helping to strengthen the festival’s presence and support local artists. Her ability to bring people together for a common cause is one of her greatest strengths, and her passion for giving back is evident in every project she takes on. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois, followed by a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Miami. Furthering her commitment to education, she pursued an additional Master’s degree from Barry University. She has shared her knowledge and expertise as an adjunct professor of psychology at St. Thomas University and Barry University in Miami, as well as at Stetson University in DeLand. Before retiring, she practiced clinical psychology in both Miami and DeLand, served as a family court mediator, conducted parenting evaluations, and performed Baker Act evaluations for Stewart-Marchman Act, ensuring the well-being of those in need. Karen has been instrumental in bringing Girls on the Run, an international nonprofit, to Volusia County. She served as board chair for many years and continues to serve as treasurer for Girls on the Run of Volusia County (FL). Through her leadership, the organization has empowered thousands of young girls, instilling confidence, teamwork, and resilience. In Fall 2019, Girls on the Run celebrated serving its 4,000th participant in Volusia County—a milestone that would not have been possible without Karen’s guidance. Another testament to her leadership is her role in uniting all DeLand Rotary Clubs to take over MESTRONG, an organization dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families. Through her efforts, she coordinated six different Rotary clubs and their volunteers, ensuring that the organization continues to serve those in need. Her commitment to Rotary remains strong, as she currently serves as the secretary of the DeLand Sunset Rotary Club. Recognizing her unwavering dedication, District Governor Nominee Bo Norton invited her to return as Membership Assistant Governor starting in July 2025, followed by a role as Assistant Governor in 2026—an opportunity she enthusiastically accepted. At the Rotary District 6970 Vibrant Club Seminar, she was honored as the 2020 recipient of the Al Watson Memorial Award, a testament to her steadfast commitment to service and Rotary’s ideals. Her dedication, leadership, and passion for making a difference have had a profound and lasting impact on the DeLand community. Karen embodies what it means to be a true servant and leader.
